I Spy Fun - DIY Binoculars

The “I Spy” game is a classic time buster on road trips but can be played just about anywhere. Take this game to the next level,  add some imagination to it, and you can get those little minds going.

Make Your Own Binoculars

You kids will love to make these unique and all their own with a bit of encouragement from the creative themes. This is an easy craft to add to your searching skills.

You will need:

  • Two toilet paper rolls
  • Two sheets of your favourite coloured paper
  • Double sided tape or glue
  • Crayons, markers, coloured pencils
  • Decorations (see below)

Instructions:

  1. Cut your paper to fit, just enough to wrap around each toilet paper roll. (Mom or Dad might need to help with this.)
  2. Glue or use double sided tape to stick your paper around your toilet paper rolls.
  3. Stick your toilet paper rolls together (once the glue has dried if you used glue).
  4. Wait until the glue dries again (if you used glue) and then start to decorate!

Decorations

Here’s where you get creative!

Go on a Jungle Safari

Stick some leaves or use green decorations to match the jungle scene and play “I Spy” for jungle themed items!

Go Star-Gazing

Decorate your binoculars with stars or moons. Can you find the moon? How many stars can you see? Or try searching for constellations.

Go Bird Watching

Decorate your binoculars with some feathers or add some wings to the side or draw some birds.

What different kinds of birds can you find?

Make It Yours!

Decorate it with all your favourite things!

Make It a Teachable Moment

Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Talk first about the context of this verse, that God doesn’t want us to worry because He will take care of us. It’s a promise that we can hold on to so we don’t need to be afraid.

Secondly, talk about what it means to seek His kingdom and righteousness. How can we be “on the lookout” for things in the Kingdom of God. How can we see God around us? Use your binoculars to search His creation and to find God at work all around us.
