“Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.”
Proverbs 4:1-2 KJV
The Oxford Dictionary describes the definition of instruction as detailed information that tells you how something should be done, operated, or assembled. To give instruction is to give direction.
A father’s role is to give instruction to his children. He can teach them skills on how to carry on a trade or how to take care of a family when they are older. He becomes a model to his children on how to behave in certain situations.
As they grow, children build their knowledge base, studying alongside their father in the moments they share together. Likened to building a house, a father teaches his children to use the knowledge they gather to create for themselves a strong house where they will be strong adults in the ways of life and faith, and in turn they will be a storehouse of knowledge for their own children when the time comes.
These are just some of the important things a father can teach their child.
To Love God and To Love Others
Matthew 22:37-39 says, “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” A father’s heart can set the tone for his family to follow. First, by putting God first in everything he does, he models this behaviour for his children to follow. Secondly, by loving those around you, whether they are family, friends or neighbours, his children will learn to show God’s love to those around them too.
To Have Integrity
“The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him” (Proverbs 20:7 KJV).
This echoes the point of choosing God first. His children will see this example and see the blessings because of it.
Be Responsible
Ephesians 6:4 says, “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Fathers have a lot of responsibilities when taking care of their families. These can include working outside the home, doing things around the house, and helping with the raising of children. Putting God first, a father will look to teach his children to have the same sense of responsibility with the guidance of God. This is so important for parents to acknowledge because “. . .every one of us shall give account of himself to God.” It’s the parent’s responsibility to teach children to have accountability for their actions.
Work Hard
A good father will teach his children the importance and value of hard work. There are no shortcuts in life, even though the world may lead us to believe that there are ways to get what we want without having to put in the time and effort. The Bible tells us that “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty” (Proverbs 21:5 ESV). Like the father who is diligent about providing for his family, so is the child who learns alongside him.
But let’s not forget the practical skills as well, like how to fix things that are broken, how to budget your money, how to build things with your hands. There are so many things you can learn, and each father has his own set of gifts and talents that he can share with his family.
Let’s build a house of knowledge!
Here’s what you’ll need:
Follow the instructions!

Here’s a video tutorial for you.
You can build this beforehand or build it together with your dad on Father’s Day. If you decide to do it together, don’t forget to ask Dad for his advice and maybe you can create an even better house together.
Take advantage of the time you have with your father. Be patient and kind, even when the instructions may seem hard to follow at times. Trust in the fact that your father loves you and wants the very best for you, just like your heavenly Father wants the best for you.
