The Oxford Dictionary describes the definition of instruction as detailed information that tells you how something should be done, operated, or assembled. To give instruction is to give direction. A father’s role is to give instruction to his children. He can teach them skills on how to carry on a trade or how to take care of a family when they are older. He becomes a model to his children on how to behave in certain situations.

I seem to look for the most out-of-the-box ways to teach my kids. They still do some bookwork style learning in a couple of subjects where they just go through the course, but overall, I like to get very eclectic in our approach to education. One of the more uncommon ways I have been approaching some subjects is using a homeschool magazine. I use both the digital and print issues for inspiration and direct resource material.

Spring, summer and fall are all times when you can focus on the different stages of growth with some of these raised bed gardening ideas. Whether you grow food, medicinal herbs or flowers, you can make it a learning adventure for you and your children.

Cities across Canada celebrate winter with many festivals and carnivals that are encouraging people all over to get outside and participate. Here are just a few of those celebrations that could be on your list to discover this year. Talk about these festivals with your young ones as you do the snowman craft for kindergarten ages and maybe even plan a trip to one this year.

To children around the world, Christmas (without a doubt) means presents. At some point on Christmas day, we sit together with our family and share in the moment of watching each other open gifts. While it is a joyous occasion, it’s important to remember the reason why we celebrate so we don’t lose our focus on the true gift of Christmas.

Every year on November 11, Canadians celebrate Remembrance Day. The main symbol that has been adopted is the red poppy. The vision left after the war was the many graves of fallen soldiers marked with a simple cross and red poppies growing between them. The poppies flourished across France and Belgium as a result of the debris caused by the First World War, making the soils rich in lime. 

Playing games with music helps children to come out of their shells and to have fun in a different way than playing other games. Music is therapeutic and fun and is a great way to shake things up in your homeschool routine, even for the teacher!
