Thinking Outside the Box

When we study a particular subjects, we tend to stay within the confines of that subject. For example, when we study geography, we tend to study landforms and cultures, but if we think outside the box, we can learn so much more. Bonnie Rose Hudson does this in Asia: Its People and History. Not only can upper elementary and middle school students learn about the history of some of the Asian nations, they can also learn about what life is like for Christians living there, how they are able to celebrate Christmas, and ways they can pray for the persecuted Church in these nations. Through 20 weeks of lessons, short stories, nonfiction history accounts, worksheets, puzzles, and games, students will have a greater understanding of what life is really like in these areas. With Everyday Easels, students can think about more than just art. Through 5-day unit studies and 10-day unit studies, students of all ages, can study great paintings, sculpture, photographs, and more. They can learn about famous artists such as Mary Cassatt, Alexander Calder, Vermeer, Homer; view photos taken by NASA; and visit landmarks like Stonehenge online. The unit studies go beyond art, however, by breaking each study down into other subjects such as Bible, art, history, science, math, health/physical education, etc. A wide variety of facts and opportunities to participate in hands-on activities will enhance students’ knowledge about a particular piece of art.
