Travel Back in Time
Why not take a day or two this summer to travel back in time? Choose a day when it’s just too hot to go outside or a day when it’s raining and learn about what life was like in the distant or recent past. Classical History with Jennifer Courtney takes us back to Ancient Egypt, through the divided empires of Israel, ending with the fall of Rome. Within each lesson are suggestions for reading about the time period being discussed, books for younger children, activities, videos, and art lessons. This Day in History is under the Dailies tab and features a historical event for most days of the year. Some events are recent; some may have taken place hundreds of years ago. With each event, there are flashcards, a living book list, questions for further discussion, a short fictional story, and activities. Take Amy Puetz’s Beginning Sewing: Historical Costumes class. There will likely be a costume that fits with something your children have learned about in the history classes. Amy teaches children about hoop skirts and Civil War costumes, making a simple handbag, Victorian collars and cuffs, and more.
