What is Art?
Have you ever seen the blank white canvas that hangs in the art museum? Is it art? What exactly is art? Sometimes it is found in a painting; sometimes it is found in music. Sometimes art is found in the way something is presented. Speaking in public is an art form. Those who possess the right combination of skill and talent, can change the world. Join Deborah Burton for her Mock Trial lessons this month as she studies free speech. Learn about the limits on free speech, speeches that protest, today’s speech, and debating freedom of speech. Lapbooking with Niki Coburn McNeil is another form of art. As students read through the story of The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin this month, they will be cutting and pasting, folding and coloring. The lapbook they create will be full of mini-books and flap books, as well as artwork and vocabulary fans. Of course we couldn’t talk about art without actually mentioning an art course. Brenda Ellis is spending the month of September teaching students how to paint with watercolors in her Art Techniques course. If they’ve never tried this medium, now is the chance.
