Homeschooling Fathers Are Stress Relievers

As competent homeschool moms, we can act like we don’t need a leader. We have the best ideas and know how to make them happen. That thinking goes back to Eve. We have forgotten that loving, mutual submission supports the family best. We know about the great love relationship and perfect communion the Father had with His Son. He desires the same unity, submission, communion, and fellowship for us in all our relationships.

But as women, we tend to say, “We got this!” except when we don’t. Anytime we think we can be the lone ranger, we find that something is missing. When we try to rule over the one who’s been placed by God to lead us, we will find ourselves flailing around wondering why we are always overwhelmed and frustrated by our own efforts. Instead of trying to be in control and bear the weight of it all, we should be willing to do what it takes to fight for unity. I often have to fall on my face before God and ask Him to forgive my controlling spirit and yield myself to His leadership again.

God has given fathers the ability to see the big picture, so they can relieve our stress in discipline, curriculum choices, and character development. They have a more objective view and have been given wisdom from God to rule our homes. They are stress relievers. Not only are they commanded to love their wives and children in real ways, but dads also have the extra tasks of provision and protection. It’s a hard, exhausting calling and we need to remember to be grateful and honoring. We teach our children to honor their fathers by being the example of honoring them ourselves. I fail here so often, which is why I need new mercy every morning.

My husband would be the first to say he’s nowhere close to perfect, but He serves a perfect God who instructs him in life, godliness, and leadership. What I love most is my children are watching a man who loves his God fervently. If they can take that same spirit with them, they will have gained the world.

Honoring Homeschooling Fathers

A while back, I got this email from a THM reader. I’ve been saving it for such a time as this.

 “Oh, Mr. Wiiiiiilson!
Are we going to receive some suggestions for this very important day (Father’s Day), my friend?
Regards,
Julie”

Dear Julie,
I’m glad you asked. The handmade notes and the goofy, “World’s Greatest Dad” t-shirt are all fine, but if you want to hit a homerun in the Father’s Day World Series, then I would . . . fix his favorite meal, let him take a nap or watch sports on TV, or do whatever he likes during the afternoon. Treat him like a king for the day. Snuggle up to him and tell him how much you appreciate all he does for his children, and then, when the kids are asleep, treat him extra special (that’s code for any young readers). I’m telling you . . . that’s a Father’s Day to die for.

Be Real,
Todd

Hallmark Has Missed the Mark

I noticed, and I’m wondering if you did too. In the myriad of celebratory cards in all the shops I frequent, a huge section is missing! Where are the fancy printed cards for the heroes of our nations, the homeschool dad? So I set aside a moment to share my line of cards honoring homeschool dads with you.

Card 1-Kids to Dad
(pictured on the front): Dad enjoying outdoor experiments that involve some danger.
Dad, thank you for doing the science experiments that Mom doesn’t want to do.

Card 2-Kids to Dad
(pictured on front): Kids dreaming of different hopes and dreams
Dad, thank you for making our dreams come true even when they involve paint and glitter!

Card 3-Wife to Homeschool Husband
(pictured on front): Husband in a sea of newly arrived curriculum boxes on the front steps.
To my hero! All these boxes represent the final result and the hours of listening to me. I treasure your patience and respect the input and guidance you have given to me. You are the best!

Card 4-Wife to Homeschool Husband
(pictured on front): Husband and Wife high-fiving
I love the homeschool team God has put together. Can’t do this without you!

Card 5-The World to Homeschool Dads
(pictured on front): Homeschool Dad praying
We appreciate your dedication to support and lead your family on this journey called homeschooling! You are changing the world and making it a better place.

There is so much more to be said about dedicated homeschool dads. I’m sure you and your kids can make your own line of cards! Homeschool dads deserve all of our honor and respect.

Honoring Dad

The crowd was scrambling to be seated after a hearty rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh‑inning stretch when the announcer bellowed over the loudspeaker, “In honor of Independence Day, as we celebrate this country, would all of the veterans in the stands please remain standing?” Half crouched between a sit and a stand, my husband reluctantly rose to a full stand. The crowd clapped for the veterans sprinkled throughout the box seats and general admission stands. Several seated around us tapped my husband on his shoulder and thanked him for his service. I smiled—both at him and the well-meaning fans. Once I asked my husband how he would like to celebrate Veterans Day. A free meal offered to veterans at a local restaurant? A free Bed and Breakfast stay provided as a “thank you” to vets each year? His response stayed with me. “I appreciate the freebies, and the ‘Thank you for your service,’ from civilians, but all I really want is for people to live a life that honors the country I worked hard to protect.”

That comment hit it out of the park, and carries into how I homeschool, parent, and raise our children. The handmade gifts are sweet and the words of thanks are thoughtful, but when it comes to honoring the homeschool dad, homeschooling day in and day out in a way that lifts him up rather than tearing him down is what reaches the heart.
